How to Care for a Canvas Print (and Keep Colours Vibrant)
A good canvas print is built to last for years with almost no effort — but a few small habits keep the colours vibrant and the surface clean far longer. None of it is fussy. Here’s how to look after a canvas, what to avoid, and what to do if something goes wrong.
The short answer
- Dust it gently now and then with a dry, soft cloth — nothing wet, nothing abrasive.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and damp, the two things that age any print fastest.
- Never use household cleaners or water on the printed surface.
Our canvases are printed with eco-solvent, UV-resistant inks made to stay vibrant for years under normal indoor light, so most of care is simply avoiding the few things that shorten any print’s life.
Everyday cleaning: keep it dry
Dust is the only thing a canvas really collects. Every few weeks, wipe the surface lightly with a dry, soft cloth — a clean microfibre cloth is ideal — using gentle, straight strokes. For the frame edges and the back, a soft dry brush or a light pass with the soft-brush attachment of a vacuum on low suction works well.
That’s genuinely all most canvases ever need. The goal is to lift dust, not to scrub.
What to avoid (this is the important part)
- Water and damp cloths — moisture can mark the print and, over time, loosen the canvas tension. Keep all cleaning dry.
- Household cleaners, solvents and polishes — sprays and chemicals can strip or dull the inks. Never use them on the printed surface.
- Abrasive cloths, sponges or paper towels — these can scratch the finish. Soft and smooth only.
- Direct, prolonged sunlight — UV-resistant inks resist fading, but no print is immune to hours of harsh, direct sun every day. A wall that gets strong afternoon light is the one place to reconsider.
- Damp or humid spots — steamy bathrooms and unventilated kitchens invite moisture and, eventually, sagging. Choose a drier wall.
Dealing with a mark or fingerprint
If something does touch the surface, start with the gentlest approach: a dry microfibre cloth, light pressure, straight strokes. Resist the urge to dab water or cleaner on it. If a mark won’t lift dry, it’s better to leave it than to risk the ink — a faint mark is far less noticeable than a cleaned patch. For anything stubborn, ask us before you experiment.
Hanging and handling
- Handle by the frame, not the face. Lift and carry a canvas by its wooden edges to keep fingerprints and pressure off the print.
- Let a big wall breathe. A hair of airflow behind large pieces helps avoid trapped damp — a couple of small bumpers on the lower back corners do the job.
- Re-tension if ever needed. Our frames include wedge keys in the corners, so if a canvas ever slackens slightly over years, tension can be gently adjusted rather than replaced.
