Canvas vs Framed Print vs Poster: Which Suits Your Home?

Once you’ve settled on an image, there’s still a real decision to make: how should it live on your wall? The same picture reads very differently as a stretched canvas, a framed print behind glass, or a simple poster. Each has a look, a feel and a price that suits a different home and a different piece. Here’s how to choose.

The short answer

  • Warmth, texture and a ready-to-hang finishcanvas.
  • A crisp, formal look for fine detail and photographyframed print behind glass.
  • Flexibility on a budget, or art you’ll change oftenposter.

Canvas — texture, depth, ready to hang

A canvas print is the image stretched over a wooden frame, with no glass in front of it. That gives it a soft, matte-to-slight-gloss surface with real woven texture, a sense of depth from the frame, and — crucially — no glare from a window or lamp. It reads as an art object rather than a document, and it arrives ready to hang straight from the box.

Canvas flatters painterly images, bold photography, abstracts and anything you want to feel warm and lived-in. Because there’s no glass, it’s also lighter and safer on the wall than a large framed piece. The trade-off: it’s less suited to work that depends on a pin-sharp, ultra-fine surface, where glass and a mount can add a touch more crispness.

Best for: living spaces, statement walls, photography and art you want to feel warm and substantial. Finish: textured, glare-free, ready to hang.

Framed print — crisp, formal, protected

A framed print puts the image on paper behind glass, usually with a border or mount. The glass and flat paper give the sharpest, most detailed rendering and a formal, gallery-wall look — ideal for fine-line illustration, documents, certificates and classic photography. The frame itself becomes part of the styling.

The trade-offs are practical: glass adds weight and glare, costs more once you factor in the frame and mount, and needs more care in handling and hanging. It’s the most “finished” option, and the most formal.

Best for: fine detail, formal rooms, pieces where the frame is part of the look. Finish: sharp, behind glass.

Poster — flexible and budget-friendly

A poster is the image on paper, unframed. It’s the cheapest and most flexible way to fill a wall, easy to swap when you fancy a change, and perfect for a rented flat, a teenager’s room, or a fast-moving gallery wall. The catch is that it’s the least durable — paper creases, curls and fades faster, and an unframed poster always reads as more casual than canvas or a frame.

Best for: budgets, temporary spaces, art you’ll rotate often. Finish: casual, unframed paper.

So which should you choose?

If you want art that feels warm, substantial and effortless to live with — and you’d rather not fuss with glass and glare — canvas is the natural home for most images. Choose a framed print when fine detail and a formal finish matter more than warmth, and a poster when flexibility and budget lead the decision.

At VividHome we focus on canvas because it does so much, so well, for so many walls: every print is stretched on kiln-dried wood bars, printed with UV-resistant inks, and arrives ready to hang. Browse the full canvas range, read more in our FAQ, or get in touch if you’d like to print your own image.
